Pretend you are the new creative director for Chanel. Take this feedback “I understand what Matthieu Blazy is doing with textile development. His reinvention of tweed and experimentation with fabrication are sophisticated, and up close there are beautiful technical interventions. But innovation in technique doesn't necessarily create a new fashion language. Looking across his Chanel collections so far, including couture, I still find the overall proposition surprisingly dated. The silhouettes remain rooted in familiar Chanel archetypes and conventional proportions, while much of the variation comes through trims, buttons, embroidery and surface treatment. The details evolve, but the silhouette rarely does. Many of the looks also seem to age the models rather than project a contemporary attitude. This isn't about making Chanel younger for the sake of youth, but about proposing a relevant image of the Chanel woman today. What gives these shows their sense of modernity and sophistication, for me, is often the mise en scène. The music, set design, casting and atmosphere create an incredibly contemporary world around the collection, but that modernity doesn't always translate into the clothes themselves. Strip away the spectacle and I'm not sure the same sense of progression remains. Blazy is much more convincing to me with the bags and shoes. There is extraordinary craft here, but I'm still waiting for that technical innovation to become a genuinely new visual language for Chanel.” Take this feedback and create a new collection.
